Different ways to tame those weeds

Weeds are not only unsightly; they can also crowd, damage and even kill your plants, flowers, grass and vegetables. Fortunately, there are a number of weed control methods you can use to remove rogue plants from your garden or lawn without backbreaking labor.

Using Herbicides

The simplest and most common way to destroy weeds is to spray an herbicide or organic weed control solution directly onto weeds or your entire lawn or garden. Some herbicides, such as Ortho weed control, are called "selective" because they only act on weeds and are harmless to your lawn and other garden plants . For example, lawns can be treated with an Ortho sod and weed control herbicide that can be sprayed directly onto the entire lawn. Non-specific herbicides, on the other hand, can eradicate any type of weed. Unfortunately, they also damage other types of plants, so it is best to apply them directly to weeds so as to avoid contact with your plants.

Organic herbicides, on the other hand, are made of natural weed killer substances such as herbs, oils, aromatics and minerals which work much the same way as chemical herbicides. They are a great choice in vegetable gardens, for all-natural lawn care and in any other situation where you're concerned about chemical exposure. Their effectiveness varies, depending on the specific ingredients they use and the types of weeds you wish to target. Read the directions on the packaging closely to find out which type of organic herbicide is right for your garden.

Using Cultural Methods

Garden experts call non-herbicidal, physical or preventative means of eradicating weeds "cultural methods". Enriching your garden, lawn or other plants using fertilizers, compost and soil conditioners is perhaps the simplest cultural method of weed prevention. It involves improving the health of your plants in order to make them strong enough to fight off weeds without any further interventions.
