Get the most from your watering cans

Every home with a garden or with indoor plants needs a well-made watering can. In fact, most people have a larger, more durable watering can for use in the yard, and a smaller watering can for use on the houseplants indoors.

Types of Watering Cans

Watering cans have a few similarities: they all have an opening at the top which allows the can to fill with water; they have a handle which is used to carry the can and to tilt it to pour the water out; and they all have a nozzle or spout which directs the flow of the water out of the can. From this basic functionality, however, there are many variations, including:

  • Herb watering cans, which are quite small and designed to water delicate herb plants in small containers
  • Plastic watering cans in a wide variety of colors and shapes
  • Nonslip handle watering cans, which provide a sturdy grip on the watering can even if the handle gets wet
  • Swiveling-spout watering cans, for space-efficient storage of the watering can
  • Tin watering cans, for those who like a more traditional material and look
  • Whimsical watering cans, which come in novelty shapes like pigs, chickens, cats and other animals
  • Metal watering cans, including galvanized watering cans, which resist rust and discoloration, sometimes in decorative finishes such as brass and bronze
  • Watering cans with changeable roses (the removable end that delivers the water), such as spouts with tiny holes for more gentle watering of delicate seedlings, or spouts with a large diameter for more liberal coverage
  • Garden watering cans, which are weather-resistant and hold large capacities of water for the biggest outdoor jobs

If a metal watering can is used to mix fertilizer with water, be sure to rinse it out well after use to prevent corrosion.
